Setlists.

Since the beginning of 2001 I've been archiving and doing a simple analysis of the setlists that DJ's and club promoters post to uk.people.gothic. This page is where I plan to store the "Top Ten" posts I make showing the most played artists and tracks.

These rankings are heavily skewed towards the classic tracks and all-time-great bands, which can be a little dull. As a result, I have tried various schemes to construct "interesting bands" Top Tens, with varying degrees of sucess.

What is p-interesting?

P-interesting bands are:

  1. bands I think (mistakenly or otherwise) to be British
  2. bands who've played gigs in the last couple of years, either that I've been to or seen on flyers or listings
  3. not so big and old that they're part of the furniture

Note that it's not that I'm against non-British bands, it's just that I cant possibly keep track of them all. If I seem to be including (e.g.) the "Wibble Pickets", a band from Argentina, then hopefully someone would let me know. Alternatively, If I'm not including the "Zaimundo Pong", a band consisting of two goths from Saxilby, who you heard 6 times at clubs in the last month then I also hope to be corrected.

Too big or too old is of course troublesome -- this is the most subjective part. I guess I'd rate anyone likely to be able to fill, er, the Brixton Academy or thereabouts on their own account to meet this. If anyone thinks a band I include as p-interesting meets this, convince me.

Finally, note that including (e.g.) Mesh, that well known boring, non-goth, old, and too-popular-in-germany band doesn't skew the p-interesting results at all -- because I list all p-i bands that get above 5 plays, or tracks above 3. Hate Mesh? ignore that line, and get the p-interesting ranking you want.

How do I collect and analyse the setlists?

I am prepared to visit websites to extract setlists ... but _only_ if there aren't to many of them, and only if they post an appropriately titled reminder here. I auto-extract any post with a list-like Subject field once a month, delete the non-setlists, grab any off websites I'm pointed to, clean up the formatting a bit (if necessary), then use a script to filter and aggregate the results. Most of the filtering involves correcting common misspellings of band names.
