Lush

(Leadmill; Sheffield, UK; 3 March 1996)

Er... who?? It was a Sunday, but I cant recall anything. Apparently I saw them at LIVID in Brisbane as well (see 1992). Frankly I'm baffled. Who are these people?

Everything but the Girl

(Leadmill; Sheffield, UK; 16 April 1996)

Equipment failure meant they reverted to an acoustic-ish set, which was fine by me, although a little dull for those who'd seen them do that sort of thing before, and were hoping to hear something new.

Judith/ Libitina

(Hallamshire(?), Sheffield, 13 August 1996)

Ooo, my first foray into small-time goth gig territory. Or even any goth territory, if the Sisters of Mercy don't count. Both your basic goth-rock-ish sort of band; although back then Libitina were more pop-ish than they later became.

Long Pigs

(SHU; Sheffield, UK; 29 September 1996)

An excellent gig, packed out with newly crazed first-year students.

Rosetta Stone/ [Children on] Stun/ Dream Disciples

(SHU/Epitaph 31 October 1996)

The Dream Disciples... who? I saw them, I heard them, but I dont remember. But this probably says more about my memory than it does about the band. (Note added 2004: as I write this DD are lining up for their last-ever gig in a week or so's time. It seems difficult to believe, given I'm now a big fan of the band, that I ever wrote "...who?". Oh well. But the last-ever DD gig? How can this be? And so now I get the strange disconnected sense of loss the end of some bands lives can engender.)

Stun were pretty good, but lacking in range. Well organised with a variety of song styles, that's really my preference. I saw the Reverend Horton Heat in a bar in Eugene, Oregon, who managed to be both ... did about four sets too, they really worked for their money ... but not very goth. Can't complain about Stun though, I scored a free t-shirt when they tossed one into the crowd at an Epitaph. Though I feel a bit guilty, coz someone else caught it about the same time as me (just after, I thought then) and we had a minor-ish tug of war til he gave up. Shame it's not actually a very good design on it. Hope he wasn't a big fan, because if so he'd be appreciating it more than I do.

And finally ... having heard Rosetta Stone a few times, I know why they chose their name. They can play three things, but unfortunately they are all only translations of the same song.
